Arsenal's Debated Sponsorship Deal with Visit Rwanda Set to End Next Year

The North London club has officially announced that its disputed sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda will terminate in June this upcoming year.

Context and Criticism

The partnership, estimated to cost around ten million pounds each year, was first established and has since faced significant scrutiny.

Such scrutiny stems from the country's reported backing for the M23 forces in continuing hostilities in the eastern part of the adjacent DRC.

Earlier this year, Arsenal was criticized for issuing a severe rebuff to the Congolese government by declining to meet with Congolese diplomat Thérèse Wagner to talk about the deal.

Agreement Framework and Goals

Visit Rwanda operates as a division of the Rwanda's development authority, which is a state institution.

It is widely believed that Arsenal entered into and maintained this partnership chiefly to increase their fanbase in Africa.

Nonetheless, the arrangement has now concluded after both parties “mutually agreed” to end their collaboration.

“Collaboratively, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have exceeded the initial objectives of the partnership – advocating preservation and sustainable tourism, inspiring millions of supporters to discover the country, and establishing a durable base for visitor increase,” declared an Gunners' release.

The statement continued that the partnership has also supported Rwanda's goal of becoming an global sports center in Africa and host more global sporting events while delivering grassroots football initiatives that have supported many aspiring footballers and coaches improve their techniques and inspire greater participation in sports throughout the nation.

Management Opinion and Fan Backlash

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's CEO, characterized the deal as a “important voyage” and asserted it had been “driving forward” the club's goals.

But that is not how a section of Arsenal's fanbase, with the activist organization Gunners Supporting Peace holding rallies outside the Emirates Stadium during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against Paris Saint-Germain in April's conclusion.

Activists unveiled a banner that read “Drop Visit Rwanda” and distributed armbands to cover up the Visit Rwanda logo on uniforms.

Broader Context and Other Clubs

Around that time, the French champions renewed their partnership deal with Visit Rwanda for several more years.

Simultaneously, Atlético Madrid inked a recent contract for the same period that has led to the emblem appearing on the Spanish club's men's and women's shirts.
