The England national team will initiate their 2028 European Championship adventure at the the home of Manchester City, assuming they attain the expected passage for a tournament taking place in the majority of the UK and the Irish Republic.
Manchester City’s home ground has not welcomed an Three Lions match since the spring of 2016, when the visitors were defeated 2-1 in a friendly, but is expected to welcome the Three Lions for their inaugural game on a Saturday in June 2028.
The team are planned to play their final two group matches at Wembley Stadium, but, should they win Group B, their last-16 tie would occur at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean beginning the elimination stage at Everton’s ground.
The tournament was inaugurated at an gathering in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday evening. High-ranking officials from Uefa and the organizing bodies were heckled as they approached the location by approximately 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who called for Israel’s national side to be kicked out from the sport because of the situation in Gaza.
Signs were held up with messages reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
The first match of the tournament will be held at the the national stadium of Wales in the Welsh capital, on a Friday in June 2028, a match that will include the Welsh team if they qualify.
Wembley will host the penultimate rounds and the championship match, which will be played on July 9, 2028 with a start time at late afternoon.
It is hoped that an earlier start, which will also be used for European club finals from next season, will appeal to family audiences and help engage a broader range of fans.
The Republic of Ireland are due to play their initial fixture at the Dublin stadium and Scotland would do the same at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
The national sides of all four hosts will enter the preliminary stage; two guaranteed slots will be set aside for any that fail to qualify for Euro 2028 through the qualification path.
The Birmingham venue and The North London arena round out the nine tournament locations. Every stadium will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarter-finals held at every host’s main arena.
The qualifying draw will be staged in Belfast, which was removed as a tournament location last year when it was revealed Casement Park could not be redeveloped in time, on 6 December 2026.
“It will be a tournament for the supporters and a showcase of everything we value about the sport – its passion and power to foster unity.”
More than three million tickets, a all-time high for a men’s European Championship, are anticipated to be released to supporters.
