A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been murdered in the metropolis of Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation struggling with entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the downtown area on Tuesday afternoon.
Officials stated the 40-year-old entertainer was confronted by a trio of assailants, with one began shooting at him before running away.
The purpose of the attack has not been established and no arrests have taken place, as per the official statement.
Police indicated that Stock was targeted as he was exiting a location in the vicinity of the Carlton Centre.
He had been present for hours at the building overseeing the implementation of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by squatters, according to reports.
"The report indicates the deceased was approached by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before escaping on foot," a police statement said.
Security camera video showed a individual with dreadlocks and dressed in what resembled a protective services outfit opening fire on Stock before running away.
The DJ sought to escape after he was hit but collapsed across the street.
Officials noted that Stock had an gun that was not fired and no items were stolen during the attack.

His killing has shocked the country and prompted an outpouring of tributes from his fans, the government and political parties.
A government minister said he was outraged and heartbroken by Stock's murder.
"He expressed his views fearlessly and impartially. He even criticized me and my decisions as a minister. He was a shining model of who we must aspire to be," he stated.
A political leader said the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a tragedy for all South Africans".
A media executive said that "DJ Warras was not merely a TV personality. He was a talented storyteller, a passionate music lover and a warm soul who brought joy and energy to every performance. His dedication to creativity left an lasting impression."
In a release, the broadcaster he worked for declared Stock was known for his presence, approachability and intelligent commentary, adding that his memory "will live on".
