The speculation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team could be building a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—elements that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities that are viable with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
