LBJ's Legendary Point-Scoring Streak Concludes, However Los Angeles Secure Triumph Over Toronto.

The Lakers star knew his monumental run of putting up 10+ points was in danger. When it mattered most, however, it was not his focus.

The correct basketball play involved passing the basketball – and he executed. Consequently, the unprecedented record finished.

LeBron's astounding run of 1,297 consecutive regular-season games with 10+ points concluded this past Thursday, as the league's career points king had only a mere eight points in the Los Angeles Lakers' 123-120 win against Toronto. He made the game-winning assist, setting up teammate Rui Hachimura to knock down a three-pointer at the buzzer.

“Zero,” James said when asked regarding the conclusion of his run. “The important thing is we won.”

A Selfless Play Secures the Game

James could have sought to clinch the game – and preserved his record – in the closing seconds, yet he opted to pass to his teammate stationed in the corner. Hachimura made the shot, prompting James exulted triumphantly.

It's about playing the game the right way. You always make the smart play,” James explained. “That’s just been how I operate. It's how I was taught to play. I've played that way throughout my career.”

James is fully cognizant exactly how many points he's scored during a game,” commented Lakers coach JJ Redick. He made the play as he has done so many times.”

The Streak's Closing Chapter

He returned to the game one last time with 5:23 remaining, the win and his personal record up for grabs. He had six points from 3 for 15 from the field then.

He got a bucket at under two minutes remaining to knot the score and missed a shot at 1:01 left that would have taken him to ten points.

He avoided taking another shot – but could have. A teammate gave James the ball with a few seconds left, however, James decided to make the pass instead of shooting.

“The basketball gods, when you play it the proper way, they often repay you,” Redick added.

Reflecting on a Staggering Streak

This incredible run commenced over eighteen years ago. It was, by far the most extended double-digit streak in NBA history: Michael Jordan previously held a streak of 866 consecutive double-digit scoring games, Kareem had 787, and The Mailman had the fourth-longest run at 575.

LeBron is such an unselfish player,” noted teammate a fellow Laker.

He focuses on playing the game of basketball. He had the opportunity but due to the player he is and his character off the court, he executed the pass, passed it to Rui and secured the game.”

Getting to ten points had long been an afterthought early in the final period. Throughout his run, he had attained double figures by the beginning of the final quarter 1,266 times coming into the contest.

Yet two of those unusual games below ten points after three periods took place in the last week: He recorded nine entering the final quarter versus the Mavericks on 28 November, then had six points going into the fourth against Phoenix earlier in the week.

James managed to extend the streak in the Phoenix game. One game later, it was over – but he still rejoiced regardless.

I only ever make the right play. That is instinctive, no matter what,” James declared. “You make the unselfish play, the basketball gods are always giving back to me.”
