In the wake of a decisive victory at the Lusail Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has dramatically closed the gap in the driver's standings. He now finds himself just a dozen points behind leader Lando Norris and leading teammate his McLaren rival, the scene is set for a nail-biting three-way championship battle at the famous Yas Marina Circuit.
Verstappen's Qatar win was not at all conventional. Although he delivered a flawless drive for his team, the race outcome was heavily influenced by a questionable strategic call from the McLaren team. Opting not to pit during an early safety car period, McLaren presented the advantage to Verstappen, who seized the moment impeccably.
"I'm looking forward to it, I'm ready to go there and have a go at it," he stated. "I approach it with just good vibes. I'll push to the limit I can but at the same time, if I don't win it, I still know that I had a fantastic season."
This philosophy he claims alleviates the weight of expectation. The goal for the last race is clear: to extract everything possible from himself and the car.
The incredible part of Verstappen's championship charge particularly notable is how far he has recovered. Following the Zandvoort round in August, he was a massive over a century of points behind the then-leader his rival and had openly dismissed his championship hopes.
The shift began with major performance updates introduced by Red Bull at the Monza. Changes to the vehicle's underbody and front wing finally addressed long-standing balance issues, allowing Verstappen to push to the limit with the car once more.
From then on, the results has been completely spectacular, racking up five wins and several top-three finishes. He made sure to credit the collective effort behind this resurgence.
"We've won races where maybe we shouldn't have, by making the correct decision as a team," he noted. "The partnership with my engineer, GP and the entire crew... we are deeply connected."
With the paddock head to Abu Dhabi, the mathematics is perfectly defined.
The pressure rests heavily on the papaya-colored cars, who have seen a sizable lead disappear due to costly errors, including a exclusion for both cars in Las Vegas. In his view, the situation brings a sense of freedom, transforming the ultimate Grand Prix into a straight chance to go for glory with zero pressure.
