The prospect of three new gaming resorts within NYC was approved, sparking conversation over fiscal advantages against public welfare concerns as gambling activity soars across the nation.
A state gaming facility location board has endorsed several potential gambling projects—a pair in Queens and one in borough of the Bronx. The board found the projects are projected to create thousands of employment opportunities while also yield billions of public funds over the coming decade.
The official regulatory body is likely to uphold this decision, potentially allow the establishments to open within the coming half-decade.
But, the decision is not universally welcomed. Critics, from some local communities and academics, maintain how metropolitan gaming venues frequently do not offer the promised advantages.
"Proponents say it will create huge sums, however it does not create new wealth," noted one emeritus professor who has researched casinos. "It simply redistributing funds within the economy. Mainly in a metropolitan area, it's not bringing in people from outside; it's just diverting spending away from its own citizens."
