The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point in his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors after the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core platform, did not confirm he would live there immediately after his victory in November.

"The choice was based on keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing my full attention on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," stated Mamdani on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in Astoria, Queens, a district famous for its diverse immigrant communities and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for showing us the best of New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will forever remain within me and the work I do," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

During his election campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

But his opponents, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a venue for public city functions, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Stately Residence

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting very different than his modest Astoria home.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's original era.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, which means the city sets limits on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the cost of housing rises faster than what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
