'Significant concern' for the English camp as Atkinson is forced off due to a hamstring issue.
Gus Atkinson further complicated the fitness woes of the England squad upon exiting the field on the second morning of the fourth Ashes Test in the Ashes series.
The pace bowler pulled up with his hamstring post-delivery of the fourth over during the morning session.
The touring camp reported the 27-year-old had experienced "tightness" and was to take time on the sidelines to undergo evaluation "in the coming hours".
The final Test of the tour at the SCG gets underway this coming Sunday.
England have already lost key quicks one seamer to a knee injury and Jofra Archer because of a side injury on this Ashes tour.
A replacement bowler was called up as cover for Wood.
Atkinson struggled during the first two matches, claiming a mere three wickets.
He was left out for the Adelaide match, only to be brought back for the Boxing Day match to fill the void.
The county bowler showed better form in Melbourne, taking two wickets during the host's first knock, and scoring 28 runs with the bat among just a trio of English batsmen to get into double digits.
After bowling one over late on the first day, he resumed on Saturday morning and dismissed the nightwatchman taken by the wicketkeeper.
However, on the final ball of his spell, he sent down a change of pace to the batsman and suddenly grabbed for his hamstring.
The English bowler was brought back for the fourth Ashes Test having missed the Adelaide game.
