Out of all the adult-oriented animated films I’ve ever watched, nothing has lingered in my mind as much as the terror-laced conclusion of the viscerally violent and deeply subversive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, this Spain-based writer-director developed a dark, melancholy , often savage universe with several minor , desolate twinges of optimism.
While The Unicorn Wars feels like it stemmed from a drive to advance the medium further, the filmmaker explained that it was rather an attempt to convey a widespread, cross-cultural theme regarding “the mutual source of all wars.”
That message is expressed through a group of colorful pastel bears , openly based on a popular series of cuddly characters.
Growing up in a culture focused on warmongering as well as the war machine, numerous these creatures are consumed by slaughtering the mythical beasts, due to a religious scripture which states them they previously were kings of the forest, before these creatures expelled them.
Others haven’t fully accepted the propaganda, and would rather sample substances or engage sexually in the woods.
In contrast to their cuddly equivalents, these bright beings display genitals and definite libidos.
For a certain especially vicious, cynical bear, Bluey, the battle against the unicorns transforms into a path to control — and especially to supremacy above his more tender, more compassionate sibling the bear Tubby.
This bear behaves aggressively , an apparent psychopath , and as horror overcomes his unit and kills his fellow soldiers one by one, he grabs progressively control for himself, in increasingly violent, destructive ways.
Meanwhile, the unicorns are experiencing their own nightmare, as an expanding, destructive monster in their forest.
“Initially, it appears as a lighthearted film,” the director stated. “Yet it evolves into a more intense and sorrowful film. And ultimately, it transforms into a horror film.”
The Unicorn Wars starts out resembling one of the more whimsical movies from a legendary filmmaker, that uncover a wicked pleasure in letting animated figures curse, engage in violence, or sex each other up.
Subsequently it becomes more akin to a bleaker work by that same director, with increasingly visual gore , a noticeable relation to genuine horror of battle.
Ultimately, it is a complete extreme drama bloodbath.
The horror that turns this an ideal spooky-season watch begins well before than indicated.
Unicorn Wars is one for the most dedicated gorehounds, for fans of graphic films who want to see a film they haven’t ever watched previously, and can endure a plot which delivers no restraint.
Watch it in a dark room without any distractions, and the conclusion will burrow deep within you and linger.
