The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th season, announced by the BBC.
An upcoming six-episode series written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."
The previous series concluded in 2021 with a finale that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived recently.
The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.
The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."
A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a offender.
Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, plot details suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had countless fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh season."
He added: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
Martin Compston called appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."
"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."
Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Lennie James.
The BBC haven't revealed when the new season will premiere.
The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.
Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
