The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
