When an teenage makes club history in a key European tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.
In only his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a three-nil round of 16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek return to confirm a last eight place.
Aged 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.
This talent is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.
He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and determination he brought to the side.
During the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.
However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing the game, each day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated Pitarch following his debut.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."
Handed a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.
The teenager has taken it with performances that have defied his youth and inexperience.
"He is a very quick player, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent endurance, effort and movement."
Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.
"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are astonished to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through local academies before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.
He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the option to represent both nations at the highest level.
According to international regulations, footballers may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they play in a official senior international match.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.
Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. My situation is positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."
This scenario echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While teenage Yamal opted for Spain, Brahim opted to play for Morocco.
For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.
He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the club pursue future success.
After his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to think about it excessively - I must deserve my playing time on the field," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
