A charity drive is aiming to send a Palestinian lullaby to the top of the UK charts. The effort aims to provide aid to people in Gaza while also highlighting Palestinian artistic heritage.
Composer and producer Brian Eno, who contributes to the track, stated that the release called 'Lullaby' represents a moment to show solidarity with Palestinians over the Christmas period. He remarked the potential for an unlikely festive coup.
“That would be amazing if that occurred, yes,” he said. “I’m not gonna be completely let down if it fails to, Christmas singles are a category of their own.”
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who features in the adaptation of a traditional lullaby called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the song's powerful central theme.
“It has a profound significance for many individuals,” Barghouti explained. “The essence is that I would prefer a dignified death than spend my life without freedom. This is the primary message of the song; we seek to lead a respectful existence that we are entitled to as Palestinians.”
The single was laid down after a solidarity show held in the autumn. Initially planned to be done as a live recording, the performance was cut from the show due to scheduling overruns.
The notable list of musicians contributing to Lullaby includes a selection of well-known figures from the industry. All were part of the benefit event, which managed to collect a substantial amount for humanitarian aid.
Lullaby was produced by a trio of producers and composers. The song features a fusion of the traditional Arabic lyrics with freshly written English words.
The group managing the project have emphasized that their aim is to raise as much as possible for a charitable pot. These proceeds will be distributed to initiatives supporting Palestinians through an non-profit partner.
“We don’t have a specific target,” a figure explained. “We’ll go for whatever we can get. Obviously, the more the merrier. All proceeds are directed out to those in need in Gaza.”
The situation in the region was characterized as its widespread damage, with a overwhelming percentage of infrastructure described as destroyed or damaged.
“In that context, a couple of million is unlikely to make an enormous impact. But I think the significant factor is primarily making this cause better known and demonstrating there’s another side to the story.”
The song is launching at the end of the week. Additionally, a video of the benefit event will be made accessible to view on a popular streaming site from later in the month.
