A large-scale search and rescue effort is currently under way in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of missing boats carrying relief goods journeying from the Mexican coast to Havana.

Maritime Search and Rescue Efforts Deployed

Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval teams and military search aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were transporting at least nine sailors, according to a navy statement.

The boats had been projected to reach Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no official word of their docking, the statement clarified.

Context of Aid to the Nation

The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the island endures repeated nationwide blackouts.

"The captains and crews are seasoned mariners, and each boat are equipped with appropriate safety equipment and emergency beacons," an official associated with the mission said.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their consular staff.

"We are collaborating completely with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.

Earlier Relief Delivery

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and warmly received a different ship that had carried 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the island.

That vessel, called "a modern Granma" following the name of the boat in which Castro came back to Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the 1950s, carried solar panels, drugs, formula milk, bikes and food.

Broader Political Context

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded initiatives to deliver critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the island nation was initiated.

International organizations have since warned of ""critical" shortages of supplies, with in excess of 50k operations cancelled in Cuba due to energy rationing.

Diplomatic measures have been ramped up lately, with remarks from several officials highlighting the complicated situation regarding relations.

In response to previous statements, a high-ranking Cuban official stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Reports suggest that early stages of talks had begun, although their ongoing development remains not publicly known.

The naval forces stated it was committed to using every available asset at its command to find the boats and secure the safety of the sailors.

At this time, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
