According to a senior defense spokesperson, the American armed forces executed a lethal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four people.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a craft operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was traveling along a known narco-trafficking route and was involved in narco-trafficking operations. All four male narco-terrorists were eliminated, and no US military forces were harmed.”
This announcement follows a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, vowing to escalate the military buildup.
Only on the previous day, the Pentagon stated it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 military engagements have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.
The government has encountered increasing demands to release video of a September 2nd vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have declined to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a successful operation, arguing it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of legal military action.
While the administration has said the operation is about stopping drugs headed to the US, remarks from a top official seemed to confirm a wider geopolitical objective. In a recent interview, the chief of staff said the president “wants to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president cries uncle.”
This suggests the military campaign may be linked to a push to remove Venezuela's sitting government.
